01 — Overview

Can I add an AI phone agent to Google Voice?

Yes — but only on Google Voice for Google Workspace, where SIP Link or auto-attendant forwarding lets you route calls to an external destination. Google Voice consumer doesn't expose those hooks.

Google Voice for Workspace remains the phone system. Users, ring groups, and the auto-attendant tree all stay in the Google Admin Console. Open joins as a destination — either via SIP Link (Google's BYOC pairing) or via auto-attendant call forwarding to an Open-owned number.

On Workspace Standard or Premier with SIP Link, the cleanest pattern is to add Open as a SIP destination reachable through your SIP Link partner. Inbound calls hit Google Voice, follow your auto-attendant or ring-group routing, and at the point you want AI to take over they get sent to Open over SIP. The AI picks up and the rest of the conversation runs over standard SIP/RTP.

On plans without SIP Link, the integration uses call forwarding from the auto-attendant to an Open-owned phone number. You provision an Open inbound number, attach it as the forwarding destination on the auto-attendant branch you want AI'd, and Google Voice routes matching calls to it. AI answers, then warm-transfers back to a number on your Google Voice ring group for human handoff.

What the AI does on the call: it greets, listens, reasons over your knowledge base and connected tools (Google Workspace contacts, calendar, Sheets, plus CRM/ticketing integrations), and acts. When the AI needs a human, it warm-transfers back via SIP REFER (SIP Link path) or PSTN bridge (forwarding path) with the live transcript attached.

Google Voice consumer (free Google Voice numbers tied to a Google account) is not a supported integration target — there's no admin path to forward to external destinations or add SIP routing. For business AI, Google Workspace Voice is the real option.

What stays the same on Google Voice

  • Google Workspace tenant

Identities, calendar, Drive, and the admin console all stay where they are.

  • Google Voice numbers and ring groups

Numbers and existing ring groups don't change.

  • Auto-attendants

Existing auto-attendant trees keep working. Open is one external destination on the branch you choose.

  • Reporting

Google Voice analytics continue for legs Google handled.

What's new with Open

  • A SIP or forwarding destination

On the auto-attendant branch you want AI'd, Open becomes the destination via SIP Link or call forwarding.

  • AI handles those legs

Open answers and runs the conversation.

  • Transfers carry context

Escalations to a Google Voice ring group receive the live transcript.

  • Pricing model

Open per resolved conversation. Google keeps invoicing Voice licenses.

02 — Why this works

The native Google Voice experience

  • Workspace-native via SIP Link

On Workspace Standard/Premier, Open joins as a SIP destination on Google's own BYOC path.

  • Honest about plan limits

Consumer Google Voice isn't a supported integration target — we tell you up front.

  • Per-attendant opt-in

Pick exactly which auto-attendant branches get AI.

  • Warm transfer back to your team

When the AI escalates, the call returns to a Google Voice ring group with the transcript attached.

03 — Setup guide

Wire up Google Voice in under 25 minutes

Two trunks — one inbound, one outbound. Both configurable from Settings → SIP in the Open dashboard.

  1. 1

    Open Settings → SIP

    Open the inbound trunk configuration.

  2. 2

    Pick a SIP region

Choose Global, US, EU, or APAC.

  3. 3

    Copy the SIP credentials

Grab the SIP endpoint, username, and password.

  4. 4

    Pick the Google Voice target

Decide which auto-attendant branch or ring group should route to AI.

  5. 5

    Add Open as a destination

SIP Link path: pair Open as a SIP destination behind your SIP Link partner. Forwarding path: in the Voice admin, set the auto-attendant branch to forward to the Open-owned number.

  6. 6

Add the matching numbers to Open

Under Phone Number (DID), add the Google Voice DIDs that fronted the auto-attendant.

  7. 7

Assign numbers to an AI agent

Channels → Phone → Agents → assign DIDs.

  8. 8

    Place a test call

Dial the Google Voice number and confirm Open answers when the auto-attendant branches to AI.
